Stair Nosing

Stair nosing must meet specific safety and accessibility standards:

• Luminance Contrast: A minimum of 30% contrast is required between nosing and tread to improve step visibility.
• Width: The contrast strip should be 50–75mm wide and span the full width of the step.
• Placement: The strip can be on the leading edge or set back up to 15mm; if extending down the riser, limit to 10mm.
• Slip Resistance: The stair surface must meet at least R10 or P3 slip rating (AS4586-2013).

Dimensions: Nosing overhang is regulated by the National Construction Code and Australian Standard AS1428.1. We recommend reviewing these standards for the most current information on acceptable overhang dimensions.

Stair nosing can be installed using appropriate adhesive, glue or screws, depending on the surface. Installation for surface mount stair nosing is quick and doesn’t require structural changes. However recessed stair nosing will require a groove in the stair to ensure a flush fit.
