FAQs – Stair Nosing in Australia

What are the benefits of stair nosing?

Stair nosing plays a critical role in improving safety, visibility, and durability. It provides a visual contrast and tactile guide at the edge of each step, making stairs safer, especially for people with visual impairments or in low-light conditions. Textured or non-slip finishes enhance traction, reducing the risk of slips. Additionally, stair nosing protects stair edges from wear and damage, helping to extend the lifespan of the underlying stair materials in both residential and commercial settings.

What are the Australian standards for stair nosing?

Stair nosing must meet specific safety and accessibility standards:

  • Luminance Contrast: A minimum of 30% contrast is required between nosing and tread to improve step visibility.
  • Width: The contrast strip should be 50–75mm wide and span the full width of the step.
  • Placement: The strip can be on the leading edge or set back up to 15mm; if extending down the riser, limit to 10mm.
  • Slip Resistance: The stair surface must meet at least R10 or P3 slip rating (AS4586-2013).
  • Dimensions: Nosing overhang is regulated by the National Construction Code and Australian Standard AS1428.1. We recommend reviewing these standards for the most current information on acceptable overhang dimensions.

Does your stair nosing meet compliance standards?

Yes. Our stair nosing is compliant with AS1428.1:2009, which ensures accessibility for people with disabilities. Our range meets luminance contrast requirements (minimum 30% difference between tread and nosing), and slip resistance standards as per AS4586, including wet pendulum and SRV testing protocols.

We offer a range of colours and materials to help meet compliance in all environments.

What is stair nosing luminance contrast?

Luminance contrast is the difference in brightness between the stair nosing and the surrounding tread, enhancing step visibility and safety, especially for those with low vision. Our range meets the minimal 30% luminance contrast as required by Australian Standard AS1428.1.

What does anti-slip compliance involve?

Anti-slip compliance ensures surfaces like stairs and ramps provide sufficient grip to prevent slips. Governed by the Building Code of Australia and standards AS 4586 and AS 1428.1, it includes tests such as the wet pendulum test. Our stair nosings meet these standards for safe use in commercial, public, indoor and outdoor spaces.

What types of stair nosing do you offer?

Surface Mount Stair Nosing

Perfect for retrofitting onto existing stairs, surface mount nosing is quick to install and doesn’t require recessing into the stair substrate. Surface mount stair nosing is common for timber, tile, and concrete stairs.

Recessed Stair Nosing

Installed flush into the stair surface, the recessed nosing offers a sleek look and reduces trip risk. Recessed stair nosing is commonly used in new builds or during major renovations.

Non-Slip Adhesive Tape

For a fast, effective anti-slip solution, our non-slip adhesive tape can be applied directly to stair treads. It’s ideal for ramps, platforms, and temporary applications, both indoors and outdoors.

What materials are stair nosings made from?

We use anodised aluminium stair nosing due to its durability, corrosion resistance, and wide compatibility with various stair substrates. Our aluminium stair nosing comes in black, clear and brass-look finishes to suit the aesthetic and functional needs of any project.

We also offer a range of inserts, including:

  • Aluminium Oxide tape
  • PVC Poly
  • Fibre-Reinforced Infill
  • Aluminium
  • Carborundum

All inserts are available in a range of colours to meet luminance contrast requirements and come with a P5 slip rating.

How do I choose the right stair nosing for my project?

Consider the stair material (concrete, timber, tile, etc.), expected foot traffic, whether the stairs are indoors or outdoors, and your aesthetic preferences. For outdoor or high-use areas, we recommend prioritising nosing with non-slip inserts and strong luminance contrast.

Where can stair nosing be installed?

Popular applications for stair nosing include:

  • Office Buildings & Retail Spaces
  • Schools, Hospitals & Aged Care Facilities
  • Apartment Complexes & Public Transport Hubs
  • Outdoor Steps & Ramps
  • Warehouses, Workshops & Industrial Sites

With stair nosing options to suit timber, tile, concrete, carpet, vinyl, or rubber applications, we make compliance and safety simple, no matter the project. Browse our range to find the right fit for your surface.

How should stair nosing be installed?

Stair nosing can be installed using appropriate adhesive, glue or screws, depending on the surface. Installation for surface mount stair nosing is quick and doesn’t require structural changes. However recessed stair nosing will require a groove in the stair to ensure a flush fit.

We also offer a cut-to-size service – simply share your stair dimensions, and we’ll custom cut your chosen stair nosing.

How long does stair nosing last?

Depending on the material and usage, stair nosing can last for many years. Our aluminium stair nosing is corrosion-resistant and extremely durable, making it ideal for long-term use in both residential and commercial spaces.

How do I maintain and clean stair nosing?

Wipe clean with a soft cloth and mild detergent. Regular sweeping or vacuuming prevents debris buildup. Periodically inspect inserts or adhesive for wear to ensure slip resistance is maintained.
